Do Low Carbohydrate Diets Lead to Weight Loss Success?

- by Alan H. Wayler, PhD

So your neighbor, office mate, best friend, whoever just lost 10 pounds in only two weeks following the latest in high protein low carbohydrate diets. And now you’re thinking you should give it a go -- have even started the search for high protein low carbohydrate recipes?

True, high protein low carb diets seem to be leading many people to weight loss success. Trouble is, they seemed to do it 30 years ago, too. They were the rage in the early 70s, and look where many of us are today: growing fatter with each decade.

The bottom line: Diets -- low carb diets or not -- simply don’t work for the vast majority of people. If that doesn't convince you, look at some of the reasons why high protein low carbohydrate diets seem to create weight loss success stories -- but really don't.

“I’m not hungry when I eat high protein low carb diets.”

Many people say they feel more satisfied eating low carbohydrate diets. And indeed, studies show protein is the most satiating nutrient. Proteins and fat (which is usually in high protein low carbohydrate foods) cause your body to release cholecystokinin, a hormone that contributes to the feeling of fullness. Some protein in meals and even snacks may help us feel more satisfied and go longer between eating. But the key word is “some.” We don’t need an excess of protein, or low carb diets, to get these effects. By just eating balanced meals that contain grain/starchy foods, protein foods, vegetables and/or fruits and some fat, most people can achieve the same satiety. One other important note is that hunger control with low carbohydrate diets is often the result of ketosis (when your body burns fat for fuel.) Ketosis is very unhealthy, causing nausea, headaches, fatigue, even coma.

“Results are results – I saw successful weight loss, didn’t I?”

Many people do lose weight on high protein low carb diets. Instead of fat, however, they're initially losing more water than anything else -- and it quickly returns once off low carb diets. They seem to see successful weight loss, too, because low carb diets restrict many foods, resulting in eating less than usual.

The big question is: Is it really successful weight loss if it doesn't stay off? For most people, if weight loss is achieved quickly and with a restrictive method such as a diet that does not allow for individual likes and dislikes, then the lost pounds will return, along with discouragement, defeat and even more pounds than before. What’s more, high protein low carb diets may also increase risk for health problems such as osteoporosis, cancer, even heart disease. A healthy intake of whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables -- often on the “avoid” list in high protein low carb diets – appears to help reduce this risk, and is the mainstay of a sensible plan to achieve weight loss success.

Create your own weight loss success story.

Despite what you hear about high protein low carb diets, there's little evidence that weight loss success is truly (permanently) achieved. What's more, disordered eating behaviors are usually reinforced by high protein low carb diets, adding to the struggles that low carbohydrate diets and other diets are supposed to solve. Stop dieting now and start living a healthy lifestyle that truly leaves you feeling good!

Suzanne Somers' Slim and Sexy Forever : The Hormone Solution for Permanent Weight Loss and Optimal Living

Suzanne Somers' Slim and Sexy Forever : The Hormone Solution for Permanent Weight Loss and Optimal Living Who says you can’t sizzle in the second half of life?

At last, a solution! In Slim and Sexy Forever, Suzanne Somers outlines a program speci?cally designed to address the needs of women and men who want to lose weight and replace the lust for life that naturally wanes with age. In this “baby boomer’s recipe for the fountain of youth,” Suzanne shows you how to:

• melt away the unwanted pounds

• reinvigorate your sex drive

• capture youthful vitality

• develop a more positive outlook on life

• sharpen memory

• eliminate hot flashes

• achieve optimum health from the inside out

In her runaway New York Times bestseller The Sexy Years, Suzanne changed the way we look at our health and hormones, showing how replacing hormones lost in the aging process with natural bioidentical hormones can eliminate symptoms associated with aging.

Now, in Slim and Sexy Forever, Suzanne combines her cutting-edge information on natural hormone replacement with her successful weight loss program, Somersize, for a one-two punch that is the only proven solution to the problems associated with aging. Working with innovative doctors, Suzanne has created a program that alleviates symptoms such as mood swings, sleepless nights, hot flashes, and diminished sex drive that are so common as we get older. Simultaneously, her phenomenally successful Somersize program shows you how to beat a stalling metabolism and stay lean and trim while eating remarkably delicious food. With millions of people losing weight on the program, it is a proven formula for success.

Suzanne makes clear in this fascinating new book that if your hormones are out of balance, you will not be able to lose weight. Weight loss must be approached with a twofold strategy as you get older: balance your hormones the bioidentical way and eat correctly. One doesn’t work without the other.

In Slim and Sexy Forever you’ll also learn:

• The truth about carbs: Depriving yourself of too many carbs will lead to hormonal imbalance and weight gain. Eat the right carbs to lose weight!

• Plateau-busting tips: Suzanne explains why you hit plateaus and exactly how to push past them to achieve your goal weight.

• The connection between adrenals and weight gain: If you blow out your adrenals trying to be Superwoman, you are going to gain weight and feel fatigued. Find out how to prevent that from happening.

And, as always, Suzanne makes losing weight easy with more than 100 delicious new recipes, including Crab Bisque with Sweet Corn and Crab Relish, Somersize Tex-Mex Chicken Drumettes and Meatballs, Peppered Pork Chops with Fried Sage Leaves, Warm Chocolate Soufflé Cakes, and Wild Berry Crostada. These are Suzanne’s best recipes yet!
Customer Review: Please Be Careful
Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.
Customer Review: Take it with a dose of caution

OK, I will say that the recipes are interesting. The premise of hormonal imbalance is obviously proven right. However, isn't it too dangerous to play with hormones? I would not advice that to anyone. I'd rather stay, with natural, "grandma" remedies as suggested in "Can We Live 150 Year" by Tombak. But I must applaud Ms. Somers for putting emphasize on "whole foods". Overall, if one is not afraid of hormonal treatment, then it is a book worth having.

Customer Review: Very helpful menu plan, but only one week
I have just finished using this book's menu plan for one week, and am into my second week. This plan is very easy to follow for the entire family (even for this fast-food addicted family). There are not recipes for every meal, unlike some plans I've been on, and even the ones with recipes are very simple. For our second week we did substitute chicken for tofu the one time its called for (but we did try it.) Most of the food is very standard fare...meatloaf, steak and mashed potatoes, a mexican one-pan dish...tofu was the only thing we didn't like! I can't say that about any other diet I've tried. I have lost a little weight in the first week, which surprised me since I'm not used to snacking...it seemed like a ton of food at first, but by the end of the week I was starting to adjust and want to eat that often. Anyway, I think the menu plan was fabulous, but I gave it 4 stars because I think only one week of plan is a bit skimpy...how about a month??
Customer Review: Discouraging!
The author of this book makes losing weight while nursing sound much harder than I found it to be. She sites studies which show nursing doesn't really help you take off the pounds, which is odd because most nursing resources tout easier weight loss as one of the benefits to the mother (and they site studies to back their conclusions, too).

She is also FAR too conservative in her idea of how much weight it's safe to lose while nursing. For the first six months, she says a one to two lb loss per month should be your maximum! If, like me, you gained a bit more weight than the recommended 25-30 lbs, that's downright depressing... and, I believe, inaccurate. According to La Leche League, after 2 mos. post partum you can safely aim to lose up to a pound a week with no adverse affects on nursing.

The other problem I have with this book is her pronoucements on nursing and sleep duration. She asserts that breastfed babies wake up more often at night than formula babies. I don't think that's necessarily true, as I know formula-fed infants who wake every 2-3 hours all night long and breastfed ones who slept a 6 hour stretch from birth. Worse yet, she says that breastfed babies won't sleep through the night until "well into the second year of life." That's CRAZY.

When your baby sleeps through the night depends on your child, your parenting practices, your sleeping arrangements and a lot of other variables--not just on what or how you feed them.

I'm so glad I didn't read this book with my first child, because the message is "breastfeeding = being chunky and sleep deprived for up to two years" and, not knowing better, I would have found that completely depressing.
