Developing a Fitness Attitude - A Healthy Weight Loss Program Approach

- by Marsha J. Hudnall

Exercise is Not a Four Letter Word

It's obvious that the word 'exercise' has more than four letters, but many of us will agree it sounds like a four-letter word.

Indeed, many people feel so negatively about exercise, experts often advise using the term 'physical activity' instead.

No matter what you call it, moving your body is critical to feeling and staying well. And to achieve and maintain healthy weights, it's key. The sticking point generally comes when we try to do it. (Regardless what Nike says, there's a bit more to it sometimes than just doing it.)

So here's Green Mountain's take on how to keep going when you just don't want to do it.

  • Focus on feeling good. That may mean rethinking your goals. If they are to lose weight above all else, you might find yourself facing some serious motivational challenges as you pass through the normal peaks and valleys of everyday energy. To find more motivation, refocus your goals to feeling great, having energy to do the things you want, and staying healthy. You'll likely find your weight moving to a healthier place, too. Read about Green Mountain's top ten reasons to exercise.

  • Choose to move in ways you enjoy. It's really, really hard to do something we don't like doing. So when it comes to exercise, find things that are fun! Yes, they do exist. This may mean you need to change your definition of exercise. Or call it physical activity instead. See our list of Top Ten Reasons to Exercise.

  • Forget doing it perfectly - just move. We're talking about those recommendations that say we need to get so many minutes a day at such and such intensity in order to get the full benefit. It's certainly good to have a goal, but remember: something is better than nothing. If you're squeezed for time, do something in the time you have. Customer Review: My food/diet bible!
I'm really happy with the results I've achieved after following natalia's advice for the last 10 months. I eat a lot - but only the prescribed foods and juices - and now, I'm 6 months pregnant. My Baby has "a beautiful spine" according to the sonographer, and although I have felt very tired thru most of my pregnancy, I've never had "morning sickness". My weight gain up to this point is 19 pounds.

The options for cooked foods, meat and fish work well for my husband. He is very active, and a bodybuilder. He is very lean - the last thing he wants is to lose weight. So he gets lots of veggies, the "green lemonade" every morning, and kamut pasta, sweet potatoes, salads, fish, some chicken etc., for dinner. (all organic of course!) I tend to stick with the raw, vegetarian options on the plan.

When I eat "normally" (tradtional american fare) I tend to be about 15 -20 pounds over weight, and don't have a lot of energy. On this plan - granted I was only on it for about four months before I got pregnant - I dropped 10 pounds in the first month, and my weight loss continued until I got pregnat. My weight stayed low no matter what I ate in the first trimester - I contiuned with lots of veggies, the Green Lemonade, and the "easy exit" foods. I tend to not eat a lot of nuts and seeds - almond butter here and there, but really LOTS of vegetables - and RAW milk an RAW cheese occasionally. She's not big on dairy at all - but seems to be okay with raw upasturized dairy. That's something I have picked up from other raw food books i've read (David Wolf, Steve Arlin, etc...) so don't quote me on Natalia's "approval" of the raw dairy.

The best of it is that my skin is very clear, and I really see a difference in my skin if I miss more than 2 days of the Green Lemonade. It's a great program, easy to follow, not too dogmatic, and I've had great results.

If you tend to gain weight in your belly and back, you're an apple. If your thighs and derriere are where you bear extra baggage, you're a pear. But do you know that your fruit IQ is the single most powerful predictor of future health? Body type directly affects your likelihood for obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, stroke, varicose veins, and certain cancers. But, as medical pioneer and ABC's women's health expert Marie Savard, M.D., explains in this ground-breaking book, there are things you can do to prevent or even reverse the risks of body shape. The Body Shape Solution to Weight Loss and Wellness can help you:

• understand what body shape means, and how it relates to your health

• learn how to distinguish between subcutaneous and visceral fat -- butt or gut! -- and discover why all fat is not created equal

• discover the Elite foods that help protect against disease and improve your odds of shedding fat

• acquire the tools you need to make conscious, informed, healthy choices about food

• throw away your scale and get out of the cycle of diet failure -- for good!

Work with your body -- not against it -- to achieve maximum health and look your best!

Customer Review: Great book! Great Program!
The program in this book is so easy and produces great results. I have been on it for 8 weeks and have lost 3.25 inches around my waist, 7 pounds and lowered my cholesterol by 33 points. It is easy to read and understand with simple charts for knowing what to eat. No more measuring or counting calories. The concept is to concentrate on losing inches instead of pounds for optimal health. I thought that I had no choice but to be a fat apple after gaining 1" in waist size for each pound gained after menapause. I thought this was my heredity and destiny, based on the body shapes of my mother an aunts. Not so, I am finding out. I would highly recommend this book and program to anyone interested in reducing there waist size and having a heart healthy, body.
Customer Review: Life Changing!
Apples & Pears has changed my life! I approach food, exercise and health in a new and positive light after reading this book. My eating habits have changed and I have lost weight, but more importantly, I understand for the first time, why and how I have had difficulties in the past losing and keeping weight off. With the insights and well researched wealth of information offered in Dr. Savard's book, I am eating and exercising with a better understanding of how my activities and choices affect my health and well-being. It has also changed how I counsel others -- friends and family members -- about their own eating and exercise habits. Thank you, Dr. Savard! Your book has changed my life -- I feel positive and in control with the understanding and insights I have gained!
